Building Community Through Beauty
Colorful flowers spill out of pots, flowerbeds, and can be glimpsed—in abundance—in backyards around the Village. The lucky guests of Encore’s Garden Walk learned how much pride residents take in their gardens and green spaces.
Walk around Mt. Morris and you’ll also find carefully tended flowerbeds and containers dotting the campus and other public spaces. Though not the oversized arrangements seen in some towns, these are thoughtfully planned and nurtured by Encore Beautification Committee volunteers and others who love our community and understand the importance of appearance and sustainability.
Flowers in still life—two murals created by Encore Artists-in-Residence—brighten the Senior & Community Center and surprise visitors walking the perimeter of Dillehay Park. The foundational principle of Encore Mt. Morris is art: Establish Mt. Morris as a unique, thriving, rural and cultural arts destination in northwest Illinois. Our town’s music, food, arts, and beautification all contribute to that goal.
“Thoughtfully maintained public spaces promote safety, create a sense of welcome, and signal that this is a community that values its surroundings and its people,” said GoRockford president and CEO John Groh. It is certainly true of Mt. Morris.
Attention to community appearance—the beautification, vibrant public art, and well-maintained surroundings—builds community, welcomes visitors, and invites you to stop and take a look around. It’s not a side project; it’s central to growing tourism, promoting civic pride, and shaping our town.
Creating and maintaining beautiful spaces also improves quality of life. People are drawn to engaging environments where they want to stay and make memories. Our quality of life makes Mt. Morris attractive to visitors, potential residents, and businesses.
So, stop. Look around. Thank those who beautify their homes and businesses. And appreciate the work of volunteers and Village staff who carefully tend and improve our public spaces through art, flowers, and upkeep.
I’m proud to be a resident of my town, Mt. Morris. I wouldn’t live anywhere else. Discover more reasons to love Mt. Morris here.
