Best-Kept Secret in the Area

“It’s the best-kept secret in the area,” says Salley Wessels.
She’s talking about Sunset Golf Course in Mt. Morris. And, if you don’t know who Salley Wessels is, you don’t know golf. She’s a Mt. Morris native, long-time coach and teacher, and local golf legend. Wessels is a 13-time (Rockford) City champ, an 8-time Illinois Senior Women’s Amateur Golf winner, and was named the greatest woman golfer by the Rockford Register Star. Area golf tournaments are named after her.
Let’s just say that she knows what she’s talking about when it comes to golf.
“Sunset. It’s so neat for a nine-hole course, and this community – especially when so many courses are closing. This one is vibrant, adding events and opportunities. It’s in beautiful shape and kept in beautiful shape. I can’t say enough about it. It’s the best-kept secret in the area,” says Wessels.
“It’s especially good for beginners. But also a great course for accomplished golfers because the greens are smaller, and golfers have to be accurate. It’s a challenge for the better golfers.”
Sunset is different from other nine-hole courses because there are four additional holes, making 13 different tee-offs in an 18-hole round.
“I’ve been (playing) there for years,” added Wessels. “I’m thankful that I grew up in Mt. Morris because of the opportunities that Sunset and the people offered me.”
Sunset Golf Course, 216 Sunset Lane, is a public course and offers child and adult lessons. Play a round or two and see if you agree with Salley.
